My legal name is Xiang (向). In English-speaking contexts I usually go by Shawn.

They’re the same name, just different scripts. Shawn is how Xiang sounds when you say it out loud in Mandarin — the tones and vowels map cleanly enough that friends abroad started using it, and it stuck.

So if you meet me as Shawn, you’re still saying my name. 向 and Shawn share one pronunciation, two ways of writing it down.
